Don't Spit On Strangers

Today I found out that I would not need to have back surgery. I had sort of guessed that since I have been feeling so much better lately, but it’s good to hear it from a doctor. I have to go for physical therapy now to get my muscles back in working condition and to hopefully be able to use my left foot again. I’ll have to go 2-3 times a week for about 6 weeks, that’s a good deal of therapy, I don’t think I even had that much after either one of my surgeries. Hooray for modern medicine.

This week has started out well but let me tell you about last week. Last week was a rough one.

I received a call from my mom about two weeks ago informing me that my dad might be very sick and is having some tests done to find out what’s going on. Although my dad and I haven’t had the best relationship in the past, I was seriously worried. I stressed a lot and lost some sleep. Well, I got a call from my mom last week telling me that my dad was in the hospital due to an unrelated illness. I was seriously scared at this point. It seemed pretty grim for a while there but as usual, my dad got through it all like a champ. Now all I have to worry about are the test results from the first part of the story, we won’t know anything for a few more weeks.

Maggie and I have been on a diet to try and improve our health. It’s a crazy “no anything” diet. We can have meat and vegetables and that’s about all. It started out pretty hard but it’s getting a lot easier; we’ve both lost a lot of weight and are feeling pretty good too. But let me tell you something, you really take food for granted when you can eat whatever you want. I never realized how much I like bread, cheese and soda pop; not to mention, I have moments now where I would kill to have a pepperoni pizza.

I went to see Tribulation Christmas this weekend with Maggie and her family. That is one twisted play. If you haven’t seen the trailer for it you really should, just to get an idea of what I’m talking about. It had everything! Explosions, fireworks, missiles, Satan, cheerleaders, Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings, just to name a few. And, of course, the highlight of the show was Jesus Christ flying in to save the day wielding a flaming sword. You can’t make this sort of story up although I think they may have. One question though: If Jesus is so powerful that he can fly, why did I see him lighting his sword with a Bic lighter? I mean, is making fire harder than flying?

Now for the bad part of the show: someone spit on me for no reason. Can you believe it? I was just sitting there, enjoying the show when all of a sudden a big wad of spit landed on my arm from above. Someone must have spit over the edge of the balcony and it hit me. Now I’ve been to some shady, questionable rock shows in my day but I’ve never been spit on. Of all the places to be spit on, I get spit on in church. Maybe they could tell that I was just there to laugh at them all. Maybe they could tell I’m an agnostic and I’m going to hell. No matter the reason, I was spit on and it made the rest of the show quite tense for me. I didn’t know if it was going to happen again so I couldn’t really concentrate on the show. Anyway, good show, bad church.

I am lucky enough to be going to see Slint in San Francisco during their reunion tour . Thank you Maggie.
