I Must Be A Communist

I used to get a lot of promotional cds while I was working at record stores and most of them were horrible. I would take them down to Amoeba Records and trade them in. I'd usually end up getting close to $200 in store credit and could go nuts trying out all of the new albums I'd read about in The Big Takeover. I'd buy an album, get familiar with the songs, make mix tapes of the best ones and then take the cds down to trade in towards something new when I got a new batch of promos for trading. It was great, I got to find out about so many bands I would never have had a chance to hear otherwise. The problem is that I guess I thought it would go on forever and I never thought to keep most of the cds I really liked.

Now, several years later, I want to hear some of those songs again; all of those mix tapes have either broken or have melted.

I used to be able to use the peer-to-peer networks to track down these songs but for some reason they all seem to crash my computer now. So, I'm spending hours and hours searching websites for MP3s. It's great that a lot of indie labels have free downloads (I've always thought it would help sell records, not ruin record sales. If you hear a song you like, you'll end up buying the album) and there are a lot of cool MP3 blogs now too; the problem is that despite the growing number of free downloads, I still can't find the songs I want. I am even having a hard time finding the albums with the songs I want for sale anywhere. I should have just kept the cds.

I guess it's time to just give up and move on.

Songs (That I Can't Seem To Find) Of The Day:
"Boston Strong Girl" - Lithium X-mas
"Ugly" - Pretty Mighty Mighty
