Survival Horror

I watched Resident Evil: Apocalypse last night and I really wish I hadn’t. I’m a big fan of the Resident Evil video game series but I hate what they’ve done with the movies.

I remember when the first Resident Evil movie came out; I was so excited I ran out on opening day to see it. I was so thoroughly disappointed that I told myself I’d never watch this, or any other, Resident Evil movie again.

Two years later Resident Evil: Apocalypse was released. I saw the preview and thought I might like to see it but I kept telling myself it would be terrible. All of the reviews I read said it was a pointless waste of time so I decided to not see it. For some unknown reason, I saw the movie in the video store and decided that I had to see it. I mean, how bad could it be, it’s based on my most favorite video game of all time.

Let me tell you, it’s a bad movie. If you’re a R.E. fan because of the games, you won’t like it because they change the story quite a bit. They add in characters that have nothing to do with the plot (not that the movies have much of a plot to begin with) and they take out the suspense and replace it with action. And not the cool sort of action either, it’s the sort of action that’s put into a movie because they have the technology to do it, not because it helps the story along.

If you’re not a fan of the games, why would you even consider seeing this movie? Like I said, there’s not much of a plot. The plot of Apocalypse was basically: A team of bad-asses rescue a young girl from zombies. The acting, if you want to call it that, was bad and the character development was horrible. If I hadn’t played the games, I wouldn’t know who these people were or why they were there. And the action scenes were either boring or had too much action movie style action to them.

It was really bad.

Now, if you’re looking for a movie that is more like Resident Evil than the Resident Evil movies are, here are a few to get you started:

28 Days Later
Dawn Of The Dead (2004)
Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
Day Of The Dead
Night Of The Living Dead
Zombies

Or, you could just play these games:

Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil Rebirth
Resident Evil Zero
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Resident Evil: Nemesis

And I’m looking forward to playing Resident Evil 4 soon after the January 11, 2005 release date.
