My New Job

This has been a tough week for me. Let me see if I can put into words exactly what went down.

Actually, it started last week. I got a call from an employer I had sent a resume to. We talked on the phone for about a half of an hour. I guess I was impressive on the phone and was invited in for an interview and was asked to bring a list of three references.

I showed up for the interview and was given a test to determine if I could handle the tasks that would be given to me in this position. I finished all the tasks without any errors. We then sat down and had another long interview where I answered all the questions correctly.

By the end of the interview, I was being told how impressive my resume was, how perfect I would be for the job and how it seemed I could do anything. I was even told "I only have one more interview to do and unless they totally blow my socks off, you're in. And let me say, it'll be hard to top you".

I was very excited because this job was exactly what I was looking for. Part-time so I could go back to school, good pay, flexible hours, benefits, vacation and of course, it was a very interesting job.

I got a call the next day and was told that they wanted to hire me but for legal reasons they had to contact my references first. All three references were called on Thursday. By Monday, two had called back and put in a good word for me. The third one was taking too long so I gave her another reference to call. I gave them two days and called back to see if the last reference had called back yet.

Here's where it gets really good.

I was told that they gave the job to someone else. Because my references were taking so long, someone had a chance to send in another resume and interview for the position. I was told this person had a little more accounting experience than me and had a more "stable work history". Not to mention, her references all called right back. I was also told "If your references had all called back on Monday you would have had this job. Next time you should check on your references and let them know they'll be getting calls".

After I was told that I was the wrong person for this job because of something my references didn't do, I was again smothered in praise. I was told how great I was and how well I interviewed. I was told how many skills I had, how personable I was, how nice I was, how great my resume looked and how I should have no problem getting another job.

Bullshit! I have been trying to get a decent job like this one for years now.

I guess I'll just have to keep looking. Wish me luck.
