The Quasi New Pornographers
I’m usually not that interested in “pop” music but I have to admit I have a new obsession; Mates Of State.
A few months ago I downloaded the track “Fraud In The 80’s” from Barsuk’s website. At first I didn’t think much of the band other than they were trying to cash in on the popularity of bands such as the New Pornographers and Quasi. They have male and female vocals not unlike the New Pornographers Neko Case and A.C. Newman and not only the sound of mid-era Quasi but the reverse band setup of Quasi; the guy sings and plays drums while the girl plays keyboards and sings. Not to mention, they play up the “We’re so in love and aren’t we just so cute” angle. Now add in a heaping helping of pop sensibilities and you have Mates Of State. This is usually not my sort of thing.
Last week I cashed in on eMusic’s 50 free downloads at which time I downloaded the Mates Of State All Day EP. I burned it to a cd and went for a drive. The sun was out, the temperature was warm and I was immediately sucked into the music on my stereo. All at once it hit me; this is perfect music for spring and summer. It’s constantly up-tempo, happy, has lots of melody and full of sing-along lyrics with plenty of harmony.
For the last few days now I’ve been trying to find and download as many free songs by them as I can find. I find myself singing the songs in my head all day and I want to hear the music all the time. It’s definitely crack for the over 30 crowd. Let’s see if the high lasts or if it's a quick come down.
